Biography information:

Katelyn Leonard is a recent graduate of Valparaiso University, where she received training in choir, band, orchestra, and general music education. Leonard completed her student teaching work in the School City of Hobart, under Brian Grenier, where she conducted a research project on self-monitoring and metacognition within an ensemble rehearsal. Before moving to Valparaiso for school, she was active in many community theatre organizations in the southern Detroit area as a vocal director, performer, choreographer, music director, and camp counselor.

Course Offerings:

6th Grade Choir – This class is open to all students who wish to learn more about their voice as an instrument, and is not based on any prior choral training at the elementary level. Daily instruction focuses on vocal technique as well as developing music reading, writing, and listening skills. The choirs perform at four to six public concerts throughout the school year.

7th Grade Choir – This class is open to all students, but builds on the concepts and skills learned in 6thgrade choir. Daily instruction furthers vocal technique, pushing students to begin singing in two independent parts, as well as further developing music reading, writing, listening, and critiquing skills. The choir performs at four to six public concerts throughout the school year.

8th Grade Choir – Mixed Choir combines music for boys’ voices (changing and changed voice tenor and baritone), with girls’ voices (soprano and alto). Daily instruction furthers vocal technique, encouraging students to sing in two to three independent parts, as well as further developing music reading, writing, listening, and critiquing skills. The choir performs at four to six public concerts throughout the year.
