Biography information:

As an active educator, Webdell teaches over 300 music students daily in the Crown Point School Corporation where he is the Director of Bands / Wind and Percussion Studies at Taft and Colonel Wheeler Middle Schools. He also conducts the 40+ member Crown Point High School Theatre Orchestra for all musical productions.

Webdell is the founder and conductor of South Shore Orchestra, an auditioned orchestra for musicians along the Lake Michigan shoreline including Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. Since it’s inception in 2005, Webdell has transformed SSO from a 15 member chamber ensemble into a complete 65 member symphony orchestra. Under his leadership, SSO has commissioned and premiered numerous new works of music and visual art, excelled in community outreach with extensive collaborative partnerships of local businesses and organizations, and developed an active education program which includes three separate youth orchestras, an annual college scholarship award and a free arts/literacy class for families through local public libraries. Since 2009, Webdell has conducted yearly concert tours with South Shore Orchestra in many cities throughout The People’s Republic of China including Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hangzhou, Jiaxing, Shaoxing, Yuhuan, Dinghai, Anji, Xiaoshan, Quanzhou, Yangzhou, and Fuzhou. Webdell will be returning to Chinain December 2012 to premiere the new musical Rhapsody in Swing! featuring 1930s-1940s swing/jazz music and George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.

Webdell has conducted a wide range of symphonic repertoire including symphonies, classical masterworks, contemporary music, world music, opera and many American musicals including West Side Story, Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Evita, Sweeney Todd, Beauty and the Beast, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, Parade, Anything Goes, Bye Bye Birdie, How to Succeed in Business, Man of La Mancha, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Urinetown, and The Will Rogers Follies. He has earned awards for his orchestral conducting and for his musical/orchestral direction specifically in productions of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Man of La Mancha. Additionally, Webdell has presented teaching clinics at the Indiana Music Educators Association State Convention including an instrumental conducting clinic entitled “Conducting Young Musicians Expressively,” (2005) and a children’s music composition clinic entitled “Composing Kids!” (2009) As a self-taught music composer, Webdell’s works have been commissioned by public school, university, and professional performing ensembles and recorded by Triad Records and Valpo Media Arts. His primary conducting teachers have included Stanley DeRusha, William Hochkeppel and Michael Haydn as well as conducting masterclasses with Ray Cramer, Stephen Pratt, and Frederick Fennell.

Course Offerings:

6th Grade Band – Classroom Instruction focuses on beginning technique on the student’s chosen instrument, and on developing music reading, writing, listening/critiquing and performing skills.  Ensembles meet daily and several public performances are presented throughout the school year. Opportunities are available for solo and ensemble contests, festivals and concerts.

7th Grade Band - Classroom Instruction focuses on improving technique on the student’s chosen instrument, and on developing music reading, writing, listening/critiquing and performing skills.  Ensembles meet daily and several public performances are presented throughout the school year.  This class is an extension of training received in grade six. Opportunities are available for solo and ensemble contests, festivals and concerts.

8th Grade Band – Ensemble instruction focuses on improving skills learned in sixth and seventh grades, with emphasis placed on advancing the performance ability of the group.  Ensembles meet daily and several public performances are presented throughout the school year.  Opportunities are available for solo and ensemble contests, festivals and concerts.
